Lisbon Weather
Everything You Need To Know About Libson’s Climate And Weather
Weather can play a crucial role in vacation planning because you may want to ensure that your destination will offer sun and clear skies throughout your stay – and that’s especially the case with Lisbon, Portugal’s capital city, as many people come here to enjoy the beaches and sea.
But other tourists might not want non-stop sunshine and high temperatures during their trip to this city. They may appreciate the fact that colder weather can often lead to less crowding, which could be ideal if their holiday itinerary revolves around museums, eating and drinking and indoor activities that cannot be done unless there is a warm climate and sunny weather.
The temperature, climate and related factors are also important when you’re considering what to pack in your suitcase ahead of your flight to Portugal. Warmer weather means you can focus on shorts, t-shirts and light materials whereas colder months may require more layers.
Below you’ll find specific details about the typical temperatures, rainfall, sunshine, sea temperatures and humidity in and around the city. But typically you can count on the daytime hours in Lisbon offering you a stable and mild climate, with cooler, breezier evenings.
Because there is truly something for everyone with things to see and do and Lisbon, the same is also true about what time of year to visit. Some people will want rain and colder temperatures, others will want constant warmth, so keep reading to find out your ideal time for a vacation.
Temperatures
Due to its location in the south of Portugal, Lison enjoys the same type of mild climate that is typical of many Mediterranean locations. This means that you should expect summers that have extended dry and hot periods followed by winters with mild temperatures and some rain.
The average temperature is warmest from June 18 through to September 21 when the minimum is usually 78°F with a typical low around 65°F and a high up to 83°F in the warmest month of August. The coldest average temperatures occurring from November 19 until March 5 when it’s about 63°F or lower, and January is coldest with lows around 47°F and highs at 58°F.
In the summer months it should be warm in Lisbon even at night so you won’t need to pack several layers of clothing, but trousers and jackets are advised for colder months.
Rainfall
If you’re looking to avoid the rain on your vacation to Lisbon then you will want to plan your visit for the period between late May and early September when average rainfall is lower than the rest of the year, with the least rain occurring during the summer months of July and August.
The least amount of typical rainfall during this time can be as low as just 4 millimeters in one month, and the most rainfall is in winter months with peaks of up to 128 millimeters a month.
If you are timing your trip to the city in the period between mid-September and mid-May then you should plan on packing at least a light jacket and possibly an umbrella. But if you’re staying at a hotel in Lisbon then you should be able to borrow an umbrella for the times that it rains.
Sunshine
Many tourists are attracted to Portugal with the promise of a vacation under the sun, and if that applies to your plans then you’ll want to look primarily at visiting during the late spring through summer when the days are longer, clouds are fewer and the sunshine is the strongest.
From early June and for about three months until mid-September, Lisbon experiences the lowest annual cloud cover, which means more chances for clear, sunny skies. July is the month with the least amount clouds, particularly when compared to the darker, rainier winter months, whereas December is the month when you can anticipate the most average cloud cover.
The time for sunrise varies throughout the seasons, starting at late at just before 8am by October but dropping down to as early as round 6am in June. Sunset in Lisbon can be as late as after 9pm in June yet it may set earlier than 5.15pm in December.
Sea temperature
Given its prime location in the south of Portugal, along with its many pristine beaches, Lisbon is a big draw for those travelers that want to enjoy activities in the Mediterranean Sea, whether that’s swimming, snorkeling or many of the other ways to spend a fun time in the water.
If this applies to your vacation then you’ll want to prioritize a trip that will bring you to the city between the months of June and October when the sea is at its warmest. The peak temperature for the sea can be as high as 20°C in August, with the coldest being February at 15°C.
Humidity
If you’re planning to be outside a lot during your time in Lisbon sightseeing, enjoying water sports and other items on your vacation to-do list, then humidity is another important factor, because if the humidity level is too high it can make walking around uncomfortable.
Humidity is measured on what’s known as the dew point, when perspiration on your skin evaporates and therefore you feel cooler. If the dew point is higher, then the climate is more humid and you’ll sweat more and feel hotter, whereas a lower dew point will feel much drier. And a humid daytime in Portugal can often drag through to an equally humid nighttime.
The dew point in Lisbon is at its peak from June through to November, and for roughly 5 percent of this period the level of humidity is considered to be oppressive by many, with August having the most days with average peak humidity. If you would like to visit when humidity is not a problem, then come in January as it has the lowest dew points and it will feel the coolest, as there are often years where no days in this month are seen as having oppressive humidity.
